This is an instrument for viewing the interior of the eye or the optic nerve or examining the retina (The light-sensitive layers of nerve tissue at the back of the eye that receive images and sends them as electric signals through the optic nerve to the brain).
An opthalmoscope is used is used to carry out a process called opthalmoscopy. This is a test that allows your ophthalmologist, or eye doctor, to look at the back of your eye. This part of your eye is called the fundus, and consists of:
- retina
- optic disc
- blood vessels
This test is usually included in a routine eye exam to screen for eye diseases. Your eye doctor may also ask for it if you have a condition that affects your blood vessels,for example high blood pressure or diabetes.
